Terra are a five piece pop rock outfit hailing from Melbourne, Australia. Being close friends in high school through 2014, Liv Fraser introduced Cassie Sutton to alternative music. After jamming with guitars for a while, Cassie was encouraged into the role of lead vocals. A handful of busking gigs and over a dozen YouTube covers, the pair posted in the online local forum ‘Melband’ looking for a bassist and drummer. The first two people to respond (Jamie Ruggeri on drums and Michael Gooding on bass) ended up forming the original line-up of the band, with Cassie on guitar and vocals along with Liv on guitar and backing vocals. The 4 piece decided on the name ‘Terra’ after Jamie found a paint sample of the same name at Bunnings, and it resonated with Cassie because of the Kingdom Hearts character (a video game she was a huge fan of). The band in their early stage had great success with their pop rock rendition of Vanessa Carltons classic song ‘A Thousand Miles’ which generated a very impressive 60,000 views on their youtube channel.
Between 2014 to 2017 the band went on to play locally in Melbourne with a few interstate visits building up a strong following off the back of their debut single ‘Talk Is Cheap’ (which also successfully racked up 14,000 views on their youtube channel).
2017 saw the release of debut EP ‘Wasted Days’ which became a major talking point for the band gathering interest from Australian music industry. Resulting in larger opportunities supporting the likes of Tonight Alive at The Corner Hotel, national radio airplay on Triple J and selling out their EP launch at Wrangler Studios in Melbourne.
Unfortunately during the bands growth Michael had to step down to move interstate. The position of bass was temporarily filled by various friends from the local Melbourne scene. Halfway through 2017 Joey Knight relieved Cassie from rhythm guitar, leaving her the freedom to focus on lead vocals and improve her stagecraft, and became a permanent member soon after. A few months later local photographer and friend of the band, Ethan Zahorodnyj (Oversimplified Complications Photography) introduced the group to his friend Darcy Leadoux during a photo shoot, who after a few months of performing filled the position of permanent bassist. However this complete lineup would sadly be short lived with both Jamie and Liv parted with the group to pursue different creative avenues. Not wanting to lose momentum after several other bigger support opportunities came through (like supporting Four Year Strong at the start of 2018), fill in drummer Darcy Handley and guitarist Sean Morris expressed their interest in completing the 5 piece. Both Sean and Darcy had been involved in the same scene as their peers and had even been in prior bands that worked with members of Terra, it became obvious that this line up would stick. Not only did it stick but their performance and work ethic became unparalleled, showing their hunger to become the next band to create a presence in the large market of their respective genres.
Fast forward to this year Terra were able to cut their teeth nationally for the first time following Storm The Sky around Aus for their final tour playing to large crowds and sell out shows on a national scale. In April the band were invited to play in Sydney for the first ever ‘Usfest’ at Oxford Arts Factory to a packed out room in the company of a gender diverse lineup of Redhook, Stateside, Yours Truly and Between You & Me. Terra have built an impressive band 'resumé' all off the back of a single EP, giving them plenty of experience as they move into the next release.
The band has been steadily chipping away at the task of a second release for some time. After the departure of 2 original members, rediscovering the direction and writing new material would take has been an ongoing process. Coming from different stylistic backgrounds, the focus has been finding a middle ground that is still true to the bands self-image and plays to individual members strengths. This release is planned for late 2019, with the single ‘Confidence’ to bridge the gap and serve as the bands first new content from the band in over 2 years. Through all their trials and tribulations growing as a band in their new experiences together, Terra are a band to watch this year and beyond.
